Los Angeles Defective Airbag Attorneys
Representing Injury Victims in Airbag Defect Claims
According to data gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), frontal airbags have saved at least 50,000 lives in the years spanning between 1987 and 2017. There is no doubt that airbags save lives and serve an important role in keeping us safe. However, when airbags are installed or manufactured incorrectly, they can cause serious injuries and fatalities to both drivers and passengers.
When you work with Beston International Law Firm, you can trust that our Los Angeles defective airbag lawyers are experienced in investigating and litigating airbag-induced injuries. If you were injured because an airbag deployed too soon or too forcefully, it is important to discuss all your legal rights and options with a highly-qualified product liability lawyer.

What Are the Most Common Airbag Defects?
Although we tend to assume that airbags are a safety essential for vehicles, this wasn’t always the case. Before the NHTSA ruled that all vehicles were required to have dual front airbags in 1998, most cars only had a driver-side airbag in place to protect drivers – and there were very few protections in place for passengers. As of 2020, it’s now more common for airbags to be placed in multiple areas of a vehicle, to ensure that everyone in the vehicle is protected. However, this also means that there are greater chances for injury when airbags are installed or manufactured with defects.
Airbags sometimes deploy unnecessarily in fender benders and other low-speed crashes. These car accidents would have caused no injuries whatsoever if the airbags had not deployed. In other cases, airbags do not deploy when they should, leading to injuries to seat-belted occupants. This lack of deployment can be a result of sensor failures or sensor placement and settings.
Some of the top airbag defects include:
- Delayed deployment
- Unexpected deployment
- Faulty crash sensors
- Failure to deploy in time
- Defective Takata airbags
Additionally, older airbags are more likely to cause injuries than newer, so-called smart airbags, which sense when a lap belt is latched and adjust the rate of deployment accordingly. Older airbags did not have tethers to help reduce the force of an airbag’s deployment, which can exceed 200 miles per hour.
Types of Defective Airbag Injuries
Airbag deployments can cause a variety of injuries, including:
- Facial burns and bruises
- Blindness and eye injuries
- Broken facial, hand and arm bones
- Amputations of fingers
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Neck and spinal cord injuries
