Everyone knows that drunk driving is dangerous and illegal. However, not everyone may realize that distracted driving can be just as dangerous as drunk driving (in addition to being illegal).
Learn the similarities between these two dangerous activities and what you can do if you have been harmed by a reckless driver.
Distracted vs. Drunk Driving
Distracted driving and drunk driving are both debilitating. Distracted driving diverts various forms of a driver’s attention from the road, while drunk driving inhibits a driver’s cognitive and motor functions. In both situations, a driver is often not in full control of their vehicle.
This can take different forms. As it relates to distracted driving, reading or sending a text while driving at high speeds on the freeway is essentially the same as driving 100 yards while blindfolded. When it comes to drunk driving, a driver’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) affects their ability to drive safely in the following ways:
- 0.02%: Decline in visual functions and ability to perform two tasks at the same time
- 0.05%: Difficulty steering and reduced responsiveness to emergency situations
- 0.08% (legal limit in all 50 states): Reduction in speed control and impaired information processing including signal detection
- 0.10%: Reduced ability to maintain lane position and brake appropriately
- 0.15%: Substantial impairment in vehicle control, attention to driving task, and in necessary auditory and visual processing
